Today's reading: Isaiah ch. 55

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12

God's Word - a discerner
In the original biblical text, the word "discerner" means an authority competent to judge and decide. God's Word is such a discerner. This makes it clear at once that the Bible cannot be read as a normal, human book. It addresses the reader's heart and conscience directly, as no other book in the world can, and does so with divine authority and perfection. Because God Himself speaks to us in this way, we must read Holy Scripture reverently and with a receptive heart. Our heart is the moral centre of our being, our personality. It is not only the seat of our affections; it is there that we make the decisions affecting our whole life. So it admonishes us to "keep our heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:23).
It is indeed extremely important that our heart's thoughts and considerations are subjected to a salutary control. That can be done solely by the Word of God, for it is the only way by which divine light can shine on the true motives of our hearts.
Even when the "discerner" opposes our thoughts, we have to tolerate it and submit to its judgment. Is it not an inestimable blessing when our thoughts are examined, before they are expressed verbally, and our intentions before they mature into deeds? How much trouble and suffering could we be spared if we allowed the Word to review our thoughts and attitudes before hand!

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
