August 14, 2015 Today's reading: Isaiah ch.30 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 "Between your faith and mine, there is a big difference", a born again Christian lady told an acquaintance of hers one evening. - "Is that really so? How come?" Her answer was: "Your faith consists of five letters, mine of only four." The Christian lady knew her conversation partner was very concerned to maintain a decent life and kept up Christian customs. He thought that God really must acknowledge such an attitude. At first the man could not make head or tail of the lady's mysterious reply. After some consideration he inquired, "What do you mean by four or five letters?" - "That's perfectly simple: your faith consists in DOING, mine in DONE." No more was said, and the two said goodbye. The subject seemed over and done with. That pithy remark, however nagged the man. More and more, he became aware of the distinction between the rather external aspect of his religious life and the living faith of his acquaintance. "Doing" and "done" reveal a marked difference. "Doing" signifies the hopeless attempt to earn salvation by one's own efforts. "Done", on the other hand, means having faith in Jesus Christ, who "did" all that was needed for my salvation in His redemptive work at the cross. The next time the two met, the man said, "My faith also consists in four letters now. The Lord Jesus has done everything for me." How simple God's way of salvation! Not "trying" or "doing one's best", But just in believing on Jesus The weary and sinful find rest (J. Vickers) |
