August 7, 2015 Today's reading: Isaiah ch. 42 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. John 3:36 And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me. Isaiah 12:1 The uprising in Antioch In 387 A.D., the city of Antioch (now Antakya in Turkey) revolted. The reason was: the imposition of a new tax. In their fury, the inhabitants broke up the statues of the emperor Theodosius and his wife Flacilla. When their anger had died down, the rebels awaited in fear of the punishment that the emperor would inflict upon them. His grace was needed to avoid a bloodbath. The bishop Flavian undertook a long journey to meet Theodosius. Meanwhile, another bishop, John Chrysotom, encouraged the people of Antioch to count on God's mercy; but he made them aware of the extreme gravity of their act. The people repented. Flavian met an emperor deeply offended. Theodosius was hurt owing to the destruction of the statue of Flacilla, his beloved wife, who had died only recently and was highly esteemed for her piety and goodness. Flavian persuaded Theodosius to imitate the goodness of God, who though outraged by His creatures, had opened heaven for them. Theodosius gave way and said, "Could we refuse to forgive people like ourselves, after the Master of this world (Jesus Christ) asked His Father to forgive those who crucified Him, after all the kindness He had heaped on them?" For offending God by sinning we should have been unpardonable. But whoever believes that Jesus Christ atoned for sin at the cross is forgiven; God's wrath is turned away. |

Open Heavens for Tuesday, January 28, 2014 by Pastor E.A Adeboye EVERYONE NEEDS A MIRACLE Some years ago, I was invited to be the guest speaker at a garden party in an exclusive, highbrow residential area. Because I arrived at the venue quite early, I was made to sit for a while in the house of my host. The house was an exquisite parade of wealth and splendour. I had never seen such brazen display of...More |
