Before sunrise

O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory. Awake, lute and harp! I will awaken the dawn.
Psalm 108:1–2

Before sunrise
In this psalm, David seems to be eagerly awaiting the break of dawn. He wants to anticipate the sunrise with his song of praise. His heart, his whole inner being, is full of praise and thanksgiving.

When you can’t sleep at night, tossing and turning restlessly from one side to the other, and the hours seem to pass slowly, you long for the dawn. Your thoughts begin to turn in circles and you cannot find rest because you can’t find a solution to the problems at hand. In such moments, gratitude rarely fills the heart. Most of the time you don’t feel like singing, especially if pain may be robbing you of sleep.

According to today’s verse, David seems to be doing so well that he can sing before daybreak. But if you read on in Psalm 108, you will see that the opposite is the case. David is being pressed on all sides. That’s why he asks in verse 12, “Give us help from trouble, for the help of man is useless.”

In the last verse he reveals his secret as to why his heart is fortified, why he can give thanks in the morning: “Through God we will do valiantly.” Even though there is still no change in sight in the hopeless situation, David puts his trust in God. From Him he expects everything.

Like David, we should keep our thoughts focused on God who can do great things. He is worthy of our praise every morning.

Today’s reading: Micah 2:1-13 · Proverbs 28:1-10
