December 27, 2015 Today's reading: Luke 2:21-40 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day. Acts 15:19-21 Thoughts on the Book of Acts (124) James came to the condition that Paul's and Barnabas' preaching of the gospel agreed with the Word of God. Therefore, believers from the nations should not be impeded by the imposition of circumcision or obedience to the law as a condition of salvation. However, for the way of life of non-Jew Christians and for their social contacts with Jewish Christians, certain clarifications were needed. James mentioned the critical points, which referred to God's order for creation and His instructions to Noah, which were valid long before the Mosaic law(cf. . They should also avoid whatever contradicted God's institution of marriage between man and wife. Eating the meat of strangled creatures or tasting blood would present a hindrance to fellowship and for meals taken by Jews and Gentile Christians together. On this issue, believers from the nations should be exhorted to note and adhere to the ancient instruction that God gave Noah. (to be continued next Sunday) |
