God’s gifts

His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.
2 Peter 1:3

God’s gifts
God has richly bestowed gifts on us as Christians. At our conversion, we not only received divine life, but God also gave us everything necessary for the new life to unfold for His pleasure.

In today’s verse, the apostle does not list what we have been given in detail. Nevertheless, we would like to consider three of God’s gifts:

1. The Holy Spirit dwells in us. He gives power to the new life and guides us along the right path. Through Him, we understand the thoughts of God that are revealed in the Bible. Finally, the Spirit wants to keep our eyes of faith fixed on the Lord Jesus so that we are occupied with His glory.
2. We possess the Bible. It is the written Word of God that He has given to us. We can read this book over and over again, allowing its contents to affect our hearts and consciences. Through it, God speaks to us. We find instruction, comfort, encouragement and guidance in the Bible. This book is truly a gift of priceless value.
3. We have access to the throne of grace. There we may freely and confidently present our concerns in prayer to our God and Father. In Him we find not only an open ear, but also mercy and grace for help in time of need.

Today’s reading: Joel 1:1-20 · Proverbs 1:20-33

Not I but Christ

Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

Not I but Christ
I have heard it said, "People should be allowed to be themselves." But I can find no scriptural basis to support this statement, for freedom "to be myself" is to...More
