December 15, 2015 Today's reading: Amos 3 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it. Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee. Isaiah 47:13-15 The scoffing strain in these words of the prophet Isaiah can hardly be overheard. He was addressing Babylon, the capital city of the Chaldeans. In ancient time, it was the centre of astrology, that secret form of so-called science which a dictionary defines as "an attempt to determine the fate of men from the position of the stars" God had warned His people Israel expressly against being "dismayed at the signs of heaven" . His warning is valid for us today, too. Some time ago, I read a contemptuous remark about those who write horoscopes: "The stars do not lie, but the astrologers." This brings us to the nut of the problem: can I trust anyone who asserts that he can tell my personal destiny from the position of the stars and the planets, yet who despises God the Creator of the constellation of stars, and His Word? Who gives authority to predict the future? The answer can only be: God! Whoever is not sent by God is a false prophet. Through the prophet Isaiah, God threatened the inhabitants of Babylon at that time with judgment, and He pointed to their astrologers: "Let them stand up and save you!" But He anticipated the result "No-one shall save you!" We should be clear on that score: when God's judgment takes place, no one will escape His sentence. There was, in fact, no salvation for Babylon. Today, however, everyone can be saved from God's coming judgment on the world. With the Lord Jesus Christ, there is help and salvation! |

He learned that God can only use subjection of Himself, weakness in self, and dependence upon Him only. However, there was only one person, spiritually speaking, who was a true Nazarite, and that was our Lord Jesus. He shows us that it is not a negative thing to be separated from the world but rather a...More |

The Good Seed for Friday, February 25, 2017 by GBV Dillenburg GmbH Adam found an excuse: Jeremiah 17:9 In a discussion on the above text with some young people, the question was asked: how are we to understand the word "deceitful" here? After some consideration they reached this conclusion: deceitful means that the heart finds an excuse for everything. This seems a very apt...More |
