December 10, 2015 Today's reading: 1 John 3 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours. James 5:17 In former times it was not the custom to spotlight every detail of a well-known person's private life in writing his or her life story. For some decades, however, biographers have been doing their best to publicise as many spicy or delicate details as possible. The Bible, the Word of God, contains numerous accounts of persons' lives it gives. It gives reports on men and women of faith, so that we might learn from their experiences. Now one might think that the Bible would be discreet concerning embarrassing details and glass over the faults, stressing the good and exemplary side of their lives. In fact, the Bible does neither the one nor the other. Its biographies are not written from a popular or academic point of view, but according to God's aims and standards. So it does not contain any moralising legends of saints; it reports honestly and objectively. It does not omit to mention the wrongdoings of the heroes of faith although, they are not enlarged in order to entertain a sensation-seeking public. A king like David or prophet like Moses, Elijah and Jonah had to face hard challenges and temptations. On occasions they became guilty, but we also read how they turned to God for forgiveness. Another thing we learn from them is: whoever leads his life with God, receives strength to withstand and overcome temptation. For this reason, the biographies of the Bible are interesting, even gripping and always profitable for the reader. |
