What do we talk about?

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.
Psalm 19:14

What do we talk about?
Unfortunately, our conversations often consist simply of chatter. We exchange superficialities, talk about the weather or discuss the latest news. Sometimes we also vent about our fellow human beings. We badmouth them in front of others with harsh or sarcastic words.

God warns us in the Bible against useless or harmful talk: “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification” (Ephesians 4:29). In the book of Proverbs, He mentions several times the danger of talking too much. He also shows the advantage of being silent.

“In the multitude of words sin is not lacking; but he who restrains his lips is wise” (Proverbs 10:19).
“He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit” (Proverbs 17:27).
“Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from trouble” (Proverbs 21:23).
Often, on the other hand, we find it difficult to speak of the Lord Jesus or to encourage others with a word from the Bible. The book of Proverbs encourages us to say something good and uplifting at the right time.

“A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, and a word spoken in due season, how good it is” (Proverbs 15:23).
“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver” (Proverbs 25:11).

Today’s reading: 2 Samuel 13:1-39 · 1 Thessalonians 5:12-28

THE BREVITY OF TIME

How recklessly this age speeds to self destruction! The word of God is accurate and authentic in its prediction of the latter end of the world and in warning His saints of the end times, so that they are not overtaken by the prevalence of evil in this age! In virtually every facet of life, there is an overturning...More
