Thoughts on the Gospel of John (135)

If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him. Philip said to Him, Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us. Jesus said to him, Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, Show us the Father? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.
John 14:7–10

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (135)
Many think that they do not need Jesus to be in a relationship with God. But this is an illusion and does not correspond to the truth. Those who think they do not need Jesus have a wrong idea of God. If you want to know who God is and that you are accepted by Him, you cannot get past Jesus: “No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him” (ch. 1:18).

Who do we see in the man Jesus Christ? Do we see in Him only the son of Joseph, the carpenter – as many thought at that time? Or is He only the Messiah for the people of Israel – as the disciples thought? That would be insufficient.

It may be that we have been “walking” with Jesus for a long time, but still have not really recognised Him. God revealed Himself in His Son “that we may know Him who is true” (1 John 5:20). Jesus is the eternal Son of God!

When the Lord says, “He who has seen me has seen the Father”, He does not mean physical sight, but faith. To look beyond the external form and see the Son of God in faith is to see God the Father, because the Son is the perfect revelation of the Father.

That Jesus is consubstantial with God the Father – He in the Father and the Father in Him – we cannot explain. But we believe it because He said it.

Today’s reading: Deuteronomy 30:15-31:6 · Galatians 6:11-18
