The heart of the believer

For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.
2 Chronicles 16:9

The heart of the believer
Yesterday we saw that God has given a new heart to every person who repents towards Him and believes in the Saviour. Thus begins a life of faith with the Lord Jesus. Now this life of faith depends on how our heart stands with Him. Everything depends on it. In the Bible we find two different inner states: we can have a divided heart or an undivided heart.

A divided heart is shown by the fact that we do not fully give the Lord the affection which belongs to Him. Something or someone is contesting His place in our heart. Perhaps it is our career, perhaps the newly bought house, or perhaps a person who is more important to us than the Lord Jesus. The result of a divided heart is a limp on both sides. We take a few steps in following the Lord and a few steps for our own interests. Thus, there is no progress in faith.
The Lord wants us to have an undivided heart for Him. He loved us first. Therefore our full love, our whole heart, belongs to Him. When we give Him the first place, everything else also gets the right priority and we follow Him with joy. That is why He urges us, “My son, give me your heart” (Proverbs 23:26). This means that we surrender ourselves completely to the Lord Jesus and submit to His authority so that He can rule over our lives and bless us.

Today’s reading: Deuteronomy 19:1-14 · Matthew 27:39-54

Two discouraged disciples were reasoning among themselves...

Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory? And having begun from Moses and from all the prophets, He interpreted them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE I

When we are told to put on the whole armour of God, one thing becomes clear instantly. This is the fact that there is a God. We cannot be talking of the armour of God if there is no God. Anyone who thinks that there is no God is a fool (Psalm 14:1). You have to pray that God would reveal Himself to you. The...More
