To fear and to be afraid

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.
Deuteronomy 31:6

To fear and to be afraid
In today’s Bible passage, God, through Moses, tells the people of Israel the comforting words, “Do not fear nor be afraid of them”. This encouraging statement applies to us too.

Fear creeps up on us when we have an evil foreboding of what the future might bring us. We are afraid of an exam at school, or of evil people, or of a disease that might befall us. We are afraid that we will not master the circumstances in our lives but will fail in difficult situations.

We are frightened when we are surprised by something negative that we did not expect. Perhaps we are caught unprepared by bad news or we receive an email with unpleasant content.

In these moments God calls out to us: Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for I am with you! God does not leave us alone. He comes with us until we reach our destination. Could we imagine a better companion?

God will not leave us. He doesn’t just look after us from time to time, while we are left to ourselves in the intervening period. No, He is always there for us and has an open ear for our concerns.

God will never forsake us. David knew this experience, for he testifies in Psalm 37:25, “I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken”.

Today’s reading: Deuteronomy 5:1-21 · Matthew 22:1-14

When You Have A Vision

I was not disobedient to the vision.' Acts 26:19 NIV

When God gives you a vision for your life, you need to know how to:

(1) Hold it. Your vision is governed by a time frame: If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place.' (Habakkuk 2:3 NLT) Some of us can...More

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (113)

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, him my Father will honour.
John 12:25.26.
