Feet washing

After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
John 13:5

Feet washing
Before His crucifixion, the Lord Jesus wanted to tell His disciples a few things about their relationship with God the Father and about their task on earth, in order to prepare them for the time of His absence. Before He began His parting words, He washed their feet and dried them with a towel.

This act has a spiritual significance. As we walk through the world, we are defiled by sin and burdened by circumstances. As a result, we are not inwardly free to receive the communications of the Lord and enjoy fellowship with Him. Then a spiritual “feet washing” is needed, as the Lord Jesus explained to Peter: “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”

How does the Lord wash our feet? He applies the Word of God to our consciences to cleanse us from the filth of sin. It may be that He has to show us wrongdoing so that we confess it to God. It may also be that we have been given a wrong idea due to the influence of the world, which He corrects by His Word.

When the Lord washes our feet, He also refreshes our hearts. Perhaps a difficult situation in the family or a problem at work is weighing us down. Then He speaks words of courage to us and reminds us of His promises so that we become free inside to enjoy fellowship with Him and appreciate our heavenly blessings.

Today’s reading: 2 Kings 1:1-10 · John 15:18-27

LIFE IN ABUNDANCE 1

Under normal circumstances, no human being desires to be a nonentity. The various forces in the world however, are responsible for many people spending their entire life amounting to nothing and dwelling in the valley of not-well-to-do persons. The Almighty God Himself in making man did not intend for him to be a...More
