“Prepare”! Isn’t it remarkable that God doesn’t...

Prepare to meet your God, O Israel!
Amos 4:12

“Prepare”! Isn’t it remarkable that God doesn’t take any detours, but addresses us very directly and personally? The fact that God has the right to command us is also due to the fact that He is our Creator, that the whole universe belongs to Him. “Prepare to meet your God”! You can’t escape the meaning of this.
God presents the facts: every human being will stand before Him one day. Whether we want that or whether it fits into our world view does not change the fact that no human being can escape Him. And what will God do when we meet Him one day? He will “judge the secrets of men” (Romans 2:16).

The knowledge of God as the judge does not fit in with the idea of a ‘dear God’ who lets everything pass by unpunished. But there is no such thing as a ‘dear God’. God is omniscient and just. He knows and judges our every action, word and thought.

And because God is just, He must condemn sin and judge the sinner. But God is also love, and therefore He does not let anyone run unsuspectingly to eternal ruin. It is His love that issues this urgent invitation to us, “Prepare to meet your God”!

Likewise, it is God’s love that sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into this world. Jesus had to die on the cross so that we could receive forgiveness and salvation. There He bore the judgment of God for all who come to Him in repentance and believe in Him. Whoever in faith accepts Christ as Saviour and Lord no longer needs to fear the judgment of God, for he receives “everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life” (John 5:24).

Today’s reading: 1 Kings 18:17-29 · John 12:9-19

LIFE IN ABUNDANCE 1

Under normal circumstances, no human being desires to be a nonentity. The various forces in the world however, are responsible for many people spending their entire life amounting to nothing and dwelling in the valley of not-well-to-do persons. The Almighty God Himself in making man did not intend for him to be a...More
