What are we striving for?

Do not labour for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you.
John 6:27

What are we striving for?
Jesus Christ had worked a miracle. With five loaves and two fish, He had given a large crowd enough to eat. All were filled. The next day, people were looking for Him everywhere, because they were hoping for a meal like that again.

The Son of God, seeing this desire in their hearts, gave them a twofold answer. It is still relevant today:

1. Do not work for the food that perishes. How much we often spend to satisfy our desires for our earthly well-being! We strive by all means to have a better life. In doing so, we forget that a good meal, a cosy flat and nice holidays are only fleeting.

Of course, it is the Lord’s will that we work to earn our own living. However, if our thoughts are only fixed on earthly things, we miss out on real life.

2. Work for the food that abides into eternal life. With this, Jesus Christ calls us to reach out for that which gives eternal satisfaction. He Himself wants to give us something that satisfies our inner needs forever. It is eternal life in communion with God.

We do not have to work something good in order to receive this life, but rather to focus our attention on the Saviour. Through personal faith in Him and His work of redemption on the cross, we receive eternal life.

A Statement Of Purpose To Live By

Always give yourselves fully.' 1 Corinthians 15:58 NIV

Next time you pass a McDonald's, think about this statement from the one of the founders: Ray Kroc. Press on! Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent....More
