The mouth of a righteous man is a fountain of life… The mouth of a righteous man is a fountain of lifeThe lips of a righteous man feed many. (Proverbs 10:11, 21) The Proverbs of Solomon is a record of divine wisdom which is to be applied to the various aspects of our life. There is one facet of our life that is highlighted in Proverbs more than any other and that is the words that come out of our mouth. Again and again we read of "the tongue", "the lips", "the mouth" and "the words" of of either the righteous or of the foolish. The "mouth" of a righteous person is described as a fountain of life and his "lips" as that which dispense food. How lovely to see that our words can be like water from a "fountain" supplying refreshment and bringing life. God has designed to use our mouth to declare the message of the gospel, the "words of this life" (Acts 5:20). Our words can also be "food" which supplies nourishment to the hearers. The faithful servant is to provide food "in due season" to the household of faith (Mt. 24:45 KJV). The apostle exhorts us to speak words of "needful edification" that may "minister grace to the hearers" (Eph. 4:29 KJV). It has been said that the tongue is an "index of the soul." Thus the way in which we speak is often an indication of our spiritual state, even as the Lord Jesus taught, that out "of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (Mt. 12:34). We will never regret speaking words of grace that give life and healing. But we will never forget when we have spoken words that wound or that are unkind: "I am the master of my unspoken words, and I'm the slave of words that should have been left unspoken." Solomon also wrote that "death and life are in the power of the tongue" (Prov. 18:21). The words of our mouth ought to be for the glory of God and for the blessing of man who is created in His image (Jas. 3:9). What an awesome responsibility as well as a wonderful privilege for every believer! B. Reynolds |

Because I arrived at the venue quite early, I was made to sit for a while in the house of my host. The house was an exquisite parade of wealth and splendour. I had never seen such brazen display of...More |
