Five short exhortations

Finally, brethren, farewell. Become complete. Be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.
2 Corinthians 13:11

Five short exhortations
1. “Farewell”! Our eternal salvation, our relationship with the Lord Jesus and fellowship with other believers give us cause for genuine joy. Yet we are often sad or downcast. That is why we need to be encouraged again and again: “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Philippians 4:4).

2. “Become complete”! This refers to maturity and firmness in the faith. It is about living a balanced Christian life without half-heartedness. This is only possible if we have the Lord Jesus before our eyes and follow Him directly.

3. “Be of good comfort”! There are many things on the path of faith that can make us discouraged. The Lord wants to give us new confidence through the Word of God. The examples of the believers in the Old Testament who trusted in God in difficult situations are a particularly great encouragement to us.

4. “Be of one mind”! Disunity among God’s people paralyses our faith. How is this to be avoided? If we are all inwardly focussed on Jesus Christ and esteem other Christians more highly than ourselves, we can go forward with one accord.

5. “Live in peace”! The enemy does everything he can to cause strife among believers. Instead of providing an opportunity for him to do so, let us pursue peace. This requires energy of faith and humility.

Today’s reading: 1 Kings 19:11-21 · John 12:37-50
