Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.
James 4:7.8

A railroad accident
Bill and Jim were employees of a railroad company on the Pacific coast. Bill was a Christian, but Jim refused to accept the existence of a God who created a world like ours with so much misery and evil. One day a a serious accident occurred on the line linking Seattle and Portland. Bill and Jim went to the scene. There they found a shapeless mass of debris and scrap iron: all that remained of that wonderful, brand new express train that had left the depot shortly before.

Bill said to Jim provocatively, “When I think that we work for a company that calls that a train! That pile of scrap doesn’t look much like one!”

“Are you mad? You know very well that the driver was drunk!”

“What about you? Don’t you know that the one responsible for the present state of the world is not the Creator? God created man in His image: perfect. But as a result of Adam’s and Eve’s sin, it is just as if a drunken driver has been responsible for the disaster.”

“You are right. It’s wrong to mix things up. It is man who has spoiled everything.”

Jim eventually turned to God. Do we realise that as a result of man’s sin, Satan became “the ruler of this world” (John 12:31)? He seeks to drag as many as possible into misfortune. But God has given us a remedy: faith in Jesus Christ is a sure means of escaping the disaster into which Satan is drawing those he rules over.
