Evil Spirit from the LORD

“But the spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him. And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.”
1 Samuel 16:14-15
Many of us will find it hard to comprehend the verses of scripture above. We may wonder and ask ourselves: How can an evil spirit come from God? Isn’t God supposed to be pure and holy? Isn’t the devil the source of evil? Maybe there must have been an error somewhere.
Beloved, there is no error anywhere. I also asked myself questions like these when I first came across this scripture. But as I read the Bible, some things were revealed to me that shed more light on the scripture in question.
The LORD says of himself in Revelation 1:8, Revelation 1:11, Revelation 21:6 & Revelation 22:13 that He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, and the First and the Last, the Almighty. Let us illustrate the LORD’s description of Himself using the colour spectrum. In science, we learn that the colour spectrum consists of the colours of the rainbow – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet – seven in all arranged in order of their frequencies. A colour is the appearance that things have that results from the way in which they reflect light. Please know that all the colours listed above and any other colour you may be aware of all fall between the two basic colours – black and white. White is the first colour while Black is the last colour. When you combine all the colours together you get white. Black is the absence of light. When there is total darkness in a place, every object in the place becomes black. Hence, God as the Alpha and Omega, Beginning and End, First and Last, is also the White and the Black. Everything consists in Him just like all the other colours exist between Black and White. The Trinity – God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, the elders in heaven, the angels, the good, the bad, the ugly, the devil, demons, principalities, powers and everything we consider negative were all created by Him and are within Him. Apostle Paul stated clearly in Colossians 2:10 that Jesus – in whom dwelt all the fullness of the Godhead bodily - is the Head of principalities and powers.
The Bible says in Job 1:1 that when the sons of God came to present themselves before God, Satan – a fallen son of God – also came among them. And the LORD didn’t cast him out! Rather, the Lord conversed with him and brought up the issue of Job’s righteousness.
God created evil. Yes, I said it. Before you crucify me, let me back it up explicitly with scripture. Isaiah 45:5-7 says:
“5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:
6 That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.
7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.”

The LORD is the Almighty. He knows all things before they happen. He knows the end from the beginning. Nothing happens behind Him. Nothing happens without God’s permission. There is no mistake as far as God is concerned.
The devil had to get God’s permission to afflict Job according to Job 1:12. However it will be interesting to note that in the previous verse, Job 1:11, the devil had urged the Lord to touch Job and see if he (Job) will curse Him (God) or not because the devil knew he (the devil) cannot do anything without God’s permission. But no, the LORD will not do evil by Himself. He won’t touch Job directly. Rather He permitted Satan to do Job as he pleased by placing all Job had in his (Satan’s) power save for Job’s life according to Job 1:12.
Know this; the devil cannot touch a hell-bound unbeliever without God’s permission not to talk about a child of God. Also the hairs on our head are all numbered according to Matthew 10:30 and Luke 12:7.
Therefore, we can conclude that Satan and his agents are all God’s means of bringing about evil and disciplining us, his children, and keeping us on our feet. Without the devil and his agents, many of us may find no reason to worship God and give Him the glory due to Him.
Remember Revelation 20:6 stated clearly that after the rapture, seven years of tribulation and the millennium era, the devil will be loosed out of prison to go out and deceive the nations in the four quarters of the earth. You will wonder why he should be loosed again. It is for the same reason of waking the believers up whom having just enjoyed a millennium of reigning with Christ may have become lax and cold. However, the Bible has assured us that the Believers who will take part in the first resurrection will by no means come under the power of the second death. This means that the devil will not be able to deceive or harm any of the believers around at the time. Those the devil will deceive and gather are those who died not knowing God before the millennial reign and those who accepted the mark of the beast. Only the saints will reign with Jesus during the millennial reign.
Hence, when you read that an evil spirit from the LORD came down to torment Saul, don’t be confused or jolted. Just take it as the LORD permitting an evil spirit from His fallen, doomed son of perdition, Satan, to come and torment Saul. If you observe, the Bible chose its words carefully. The spirit that departed from Saul was referred to as the Spirit of God while the spirit that tormented him was referred to as an evil spirit from God. This goes to show that though God created evil, evil can never be of Him and He will never allow or permit His children to do evil. Only His fallen, doomed children – the devil and his agents – are permitted by Him to do evil whenever the need arises.
One lesson we can learn from Saul’s experience is that we should always endeavour to keep the Spirit of God because once the Spirit of God is gone, an evil spirit from God may take its place. God forbid!
