...I Came Not To Send Peace, But A Sword. - Jesus Christ

"34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. 35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. 36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. 37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me."
Matthew 10:34-38
Many Christians are often dumbfounded whenever they come across this scripture. It was our LORD and Saviour Jesus Christ who is actually the Prince of Peace according to Isaiah 9:6 saying these things live and direct. Many pastors and Christian brethren have cleverly avoided reading this scripture to their audience and very few have attempted to speak about or explain it. Once I asked a Christian brother to give me an explanation for it, he tried but his explanation fell short of my expectation. He suggested that being a good Christian was bound to set one at odds with siblings and family members. This explanation did not take into consideration the fact that all the family members may be good Christians. Both son and father can be good Christians likewise daughter and mother and daughter in-law and mother in-law. Also, from the words of Jesus, the ‘sword’ was not limited to the family of unbelievers but was sent to the whole earth. Hence, believers are bound to quarrel with one another. Paul and Barnabas disputed so much so that they had to part ways – Acts 15:36-39. Also, the church in Corinth had divisions and contentions – 1 Corinthians 1:10-12. Paul also had issues with Peter which I think they never resolved –Galatians 2:11-21. The present day church is also filled with divisions, contentions and politicking here and there.

After pondering on this scripture for sometime, I believe the Holy Spirit expounded it to me.
The peace the world gives is not the same peace that the Lord gives and represents according to John 14:27. The concept of peace as the world knows it means absence of war and violence in a country or an area, the state of being calm and quiet and the state of living in friendship with somebody without arguing. Good as the peace of the world seems, it is not adequate for a good Christian as it has nothing to offer to the inner man. The peace the Lord gives is inner peace – peace in the inner man. The world cannot give anybody inner peace. It is possible to have the peace of the world and still be troubled inside of you while it is also possible not to have the peace of the world and have the peace of God inside of you which is better off. The Lord was not interested in us having the peace of the world as it may hinder our quest for his own peace. For a Christian, to have inner peace is to be at peace with God. How can you be at peace with God? You can only be at peace with God when your conscience is not convicting you of sin. Hence for your conscience not to convict you of sin, you have to avoid sinning and whenever you mistakenly do ask God for forgiveness immediately and sincerely. Anything short of this, you will lose your inner peace.
The peace of the world has a tendency of making one forget about seeking inner peace. The world begins with the family. When all families in the world experience the worldly peace, the world will no doubt experience its own peace. You can be sure then that there will be no wars, violence, conflicts, troubles, corruption, killings, poverty and disease etc in the world again. The world will then become a prefect place to be and there will be no need to seek for a better place which is Heaven. And we can only get to Heaven when we seek the Lord Jesus.
Hence, the Lord had to do away with the peace of the world and send us the sword in its stead. This ensures that with the world being in turmoil every now and then we are forced to look forward to going to the far better and everlasting Kingdom of God and how to get there. We are forced to put our trust in no man be it parent, sibling, fellow brethren etc but rather look up to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith – Hebrews 13:2. Many including world leaders have not realised that it is impossible for the world to experience peace. They keep trying to find ways of creating world peace from one summit to the other yet to no avail. The only person that will give the world peace for a while (31/2 years) will be the antichrist and that will be after the rapture of the saints. For now, we must seek inner peace with our Lord and thereafter follow peace with all men and holiness – Hebrews 12:14.

From Genesis 11:1-9, we can recall that the world used to have one language and speech. This gave them ability to decide in one accord to build a tower and city whose top may reach unto Heaven. They loved one another so much and would not bear let go of each by spreading across the face of the earth; multiplying and filling the earth according to the Lord’s blessing and instruction given to man in Genesis 1:28. The LORD God Almighty on coming down to see the tower which the children of men built discovered that because the people were one and had one language, nothing could stop them from doing whatever they imagined to do. The only way the LORD God could stop them was to confound their language so that they would not understand one another. It was a success! They could not understand each other anymore and eventually had to leave from that point to go and build their cities. God scattered them on the surface of the earth. That was how God introduced division into the world. It was the Lord’s plan. Can we fault him? Can we blame him?
Hence, our Lord Jesus Christ was just following in His Father’s footsteps by giving us the sword instead of worldly peace.
The peace children of God must seek after first and foremost is the peace from Jesus Christ which is inner peace.
May God help us!
