The LORD is near - Friday, December 27, 2013
by Jacob Redekop, Brian Reynolds, John van Dijk, Eugene P. Vedder, Jr

In the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the ages of time, but has manifested in its own due season His word.
(Titus 1:2-3)

I can lie. Titus could too, and so could the Cretans. But God can not lie. I can deceive. But God cannot deceive. I can falsify something. God cannot. I can exaggerate. God cannot. God is 100% truthful and dependable 100% of the time. Paul writes to Titus about “eternal life, which [the non-lying God], promised before the world began” (Ti. 1:2).
Maybe you are going through a rough time. Perhaps you are filled with doubts, wondering if you can trust God or not. Remember: ho apseudes Theos. My eternal security in not based on my memory, or my consistency as a Christian; it is based on the assurance from the non-lying God. I have God’s Word for it (see for example Jn. 5:24;Jn. 10:28). But God is not just truthful when it comes to the promise of eternal life. Dear child of God, He is the non-lying God for every promise He has ever given you from His Holy Word.
God is Truth. God loves truth. God hates untruths, lies, and exaggerations. In fact, in John 8:44 we learn from the Lord Jesus this fact about the origins of lies, exaggerations and untruths: “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (NASB).
Lord, help me to tell the truth today. Help me not to mislead, lie, or exaggerate. I am so privileged that I have an eternal relationship with Thee, ho apseudes Theos.
