Two discouraged disciples were reasoning among themselves...

Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory? And having begun from Moses and from all the prophets, He interpreted them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
(Luke 24:26-27)

Two discouraged disciples were reasoning among themselves as they trudged along the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus. The subject of their exchange was the recent death of Christ and as they talked, the Lord Jesus drew alongside, “incognito.” How precious was the Lord’s dealing with their sadness and with their unbelief. He does not reveal Himself to them until He has first opened and expounded the Scriptures to their hearts!
As Jewish believers they had been influenced by a “one-sided theology.” They were exclusively focused upon the coming kingdom and the deliverance of Israel from its enemies. This can be seen in their answer to the Lord, “We had hoped that He was the One is about to redeem Israel” (v.21; see Lk.19:11). However, they had entirely missed the fact that Christ must also first suffer before the kingdom could come.
This is a danger for us as well, for if our eyes are not upon Christ, we mat restrict ourselves to one branch of truth instead of reading “in all the Scriptures” the things concerning Christ. He most surely would have opened to them the Scriptures relating to his sufferings such as : the Seed of the woman whose “heel” would be bruised (Gen. 3:15); the only son of a father placed upon an altar (Gen. 22:2); the saving blood of the Passover lamb (Ex. 12-13); the types and shadows of the offerings (Lev. 1-7); the serpent of brass that was lifted up (Num. 21:9); the Forsaken One whose hands and feet were pierced (Ps. 22); the “Man of Sorrows…acquainted with grief” (Isa. 53:3). All of these and more would have been unfolded to them with divine power during the course of those seven miles. What rejoicing as they listened to Him expound the “things concerning Himself”!
