He, bearing his cross, went out to a place called … Golgotha; where they crucified him. … Jesus … said, It is finished! And bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
John 19:17.18.30

The day on which this happened marked the culmination of the life of the Lord Jesus, whose purpose it was to pave the way for sinners doomed to die to obtain forgiveness and life from God. “The Son of man (came) to give his life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). Man had lost his relationship to God through sin and “death spread to all men, because all sinned” (Romans 5:12). But it was God’s will that all should be saved from this terrible fate; however, no compromise could be made with His holy, righteous verdict – the sentence of death. In His wisdom and wondrous love and grace, God found the way to reconcile his righteousness and His will: He sent His beloved Son to bear the punishment of sin by dying for us.

However, God does not grant us automatic forgiveness solely on the basis that “Christ … suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust” (1 Peter 3:18). He has laid down a condition for our acceptance of His pardon: “repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21). Our hearts must be broken through the realisation of our guilt before God, and we must put our trust for salvation wholly in the Person and work of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, “in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:14). On His part God has done all that was necessary for our salvation through the sacrifice of Christ. The question is: have you done what is needed to obtain it?

Today’s reading: Joshua 5:1-15 · 1 Corinthians 3:11-23
