You have come to … Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
Hebrews 12:22.24

The blood of our Saviour
The death of Jesus Christ was a matter that the Jews had decided on. And they intended it to be no ordinary death, but one of immeasurable suffering by crucifixion, by which death is a slow, painful process. They cried out, “His blood be on us and on our children” (Matthew 27:25). This indicates that they were determined to see Him dead and would take the responsibility for it without realising what the consequences would be. Even the Roman governor Pilate gave way and handed Him over to them, although he was convinced that their prisoner was innocent.

Mankind, in all his corruption, dared to become the murderer of his own Creator, the Son of God. How far had the human race distanced itself from God and become a servant of Satan!

What was God’s response to their action? The Lord Jesus went His way to the very end and sacrificed His life and blood out of sheer love to mankind.

Our verse above speaks of that blood speaking better things than that of Abel. Abel was killed by his brother Cain through envy and bitter hatred. Abel’s blood called for revenge. Not so, the blood of our Saviour. It speaks of grace, forgiveness and peace. In the Lord Jesus God stretches His hand out to us for reconciliation.

What a wonderful, divine response to man’s action! Whoever has grasped and experienced this offer of grace personally can now worship and thank God for His love.

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 51:1-33 · Romans 15:14-22
