Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
Luke 12:6.7

What are you worth?
Civilla Martin and her husband made the acquaintance of a couple in New York State; they became very close friends. Mrs Dolittle had been bed-ridden for nearly 20 years. Her husband was himself handicapped and could move about only in a wheelchair. However, they were happy Christians who comforted those around them. On one visit Civilla asked Mrs Dolittle if she ever felt discouraged. “How could I be?” she replied, “when God, my heavenly Father, cares for every tiny sparrow? I know that He loves me and watches over me.”

Moved by such words, Civilla, a poetess, didn’t hesitate to write the thought in a song now well known in the English speaking world: “His eye is on the sparrow”.

Mrs Dolittle remembered the words that Jesus Christ spoke to urge His disciples to put their trust in God in all the details of their life. He took the example of a sparrow, an insignificant bird with dull plumage. At that time two were sold for a penny and five for twopence. Yet Jesus affirmed that each of these minute, worthless creatures is the object of our great God’s care (cf. Matthew 10:29).

Dear reader, maybe you live in a difficult situation or have no-one interested in you. Well, today God is telling you: “I love you as you are. I know all about you. To prove it: I know the number of your hairs. Put your trust in me!”

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 47:1-48:25 · Romans 12:16-21
