The Good Seed - Saturday, May 2, 2020

You, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now he has reconciled in the body of his flesh through death.
Colossians 1:21.22

A naval officer had been taken prisoner. When he was brought before the enemy’s commander, he held out his hand to greet the superior officer. The commander pointed to the young officer’s sword. “First hand me your sword!” That was humiliating, but necessary as a sign of total surrender and subjection.

With regard to God, sinful man cannot simply act as though an undisturbed relationship exists. Sin is rebellion against God. We must therefore first “surrender our weapons”, which hitherto have characterised our hostility towards God, i.e. our “wicked works”. What is meant is the fundamental attitude of insubordination towards God’s authority. People refuse to acknowledge God’s claims over them and ignore His commands. Such an attitude gives rise to sinful deeds.

For this reason God demands that we should repent (cf. Acts 17:30). This means making a thorough change in our attitude towards God by giving up the independent manner of life that we have led until now, recognising His rights as Creator and Lord and accepting His righteous judgment on our sins and ourselves.

If we “surrender our weapons” in this way, we shall experience His grace and love. Then we shall not be “losers”, as there are in human conflicts. Nor must we fear “terms of peace” on God’s part – quite the opposite!
