The Good Seed - Tuesday, September 5, 2017

And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.
And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

Isaiah 49:6, 1 John 4:14

In front of the chapel of a cemetery in a big city, an elderly man is sitting on a bench with an open book on his lap. His outward appearance marks him as someone from the Near East. Could he be a Moslem reading the Koran? I creep up to him. The book is in Roman type. Might he be reading the Bible? I ask him. “Yes,” he replies, “I am reading the Bible.” He has it open at the 17th chapter of John’s gospel.
Then he tells me in broken language that he comes from Irak and has been living in Germany for some years. His son works there. He comes from a Christian family: both his father and his grandfather were Christians. He attends an Irak Christian gathering. “There have been Christians in Irak since the resurrection of Jesus Christ,” he explains. – “I also believe in Jesus Christ: He died for me and rose again. So I am a Christian, too,” I tell him.
That gives us a reason to rejoice together. I realise once again what it means to know that Christ has “redeemed us to God by his blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation” (Revelation 5:9).
Today’s reading: Proverbs 19:16-29
