And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.
Nehemiah 9:17

The spokesmen of the people of Israel had confessed their failure in their long history frankly before God. Then they changed the subject and spoke of God’s faithfulness, that had nevertheless continued. Man’s guilt stood in contrast to God’s dealings in grace. “There is forgiveness with you” (Psalm 130:4) is an encouraging word. The Bible contains so many instances that confirm this. Believers cherish them.
The first is the fullness of the forgiveness. When God forgives, He forgives everything. “He will abundantly pardon” (Isaiah 55:7). “The blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).
Secondly, God forgives without demanding anything in return. “I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake; and I will not remember your sins” (Isaiah 43:25). It is love that prompts God to forgive a sinner.
Thirdly, the forgiveness is eternal. He will never bring the matter up again. “You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea” (Micah 7:19).
Fourthly, God forgives immediately. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
Nehemiah thus knew God to be “gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in kindness”. Everyone can know Him in this character today, too. Whoever is assured of the forgiveness of his sins will readily obey the apostle’s plea: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32).
Today’s reading: Proverbs 19:1-15
