He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
Matthew 10:37

Isn't this a hard saying from the mouth of the Son of God? Doesn't He demand rather a lot from those who wish to follow Him? Indeed, He does. He expects the first place in our affection and our life. But it is in no way too much, when we remember that it is for Christ. Nothing but a clear decision for Him in faith brings us into a relationship with Him, the Saviour, who is "the way, the truth and the life" No-one comes to God, except through Him (John 14:6).
We should be thankful to God for our family relationships, the more so when love and loyalty characterise them. These are qualities that are disappearing in our age. However, family relationships must not hinder us from following Jesus earnestly. The Lord's saying above is no demand that we should neglect our relatives. But if anyone, even the person we love most, stands in the way of our making a decision for Christ, then he or she must take second place after the Son of God.
Jesus Christ gave His life, so that sinners can become children of God through faith. He has a just claim on our love. The first place in the life of a Christian belongs to Him. This is the critical point, being for or against Him. There is no middle path. What an important, urgent appeal this is for everyone to decide for Jesus Christ, the Lord and Saviour!
Today's reading: 1 Kings 22:37-53
