A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.
Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

Proverbs 11:1; 1 Samuel 2:3

At the supermarket
Standing in the queue at the cash desk of a supermarket, I had cause to wonder whether the well dressed lady in front of me had hidden some goods in her bag. The cashier did notice. What disappears from the shelves comes under the heading, “unaccountable loss”.
If it really were shop-lifting, then there was a witness who did not fail to notice. What disappears from the shelves comes under the heading, “unaccountable loss”.
If it really were shop-lifting, then there was a witness who did not fail to notice the deception: God. He saw everything; for Him that is theft, nothing else.
Any form of deception is punished according to man’s laws. Nevertheless, there are numerous cases of deception every day, and strict honesty towards others is often regarded disparagingly as naivety or weakness. In the final instance, things would be to our advantage only if everything were done honestly and correctly. But God takes note of everything, from the slightest dishonest offence to the greatest swindle, and His Word states unmistakably that “dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD”.
The lady would be amazed, if she were told that one day she would receive an unpaid bill, not from the manager, but from God, whose account books are correct and up to date. It is foolish to believe that anything could be hidden from Him. And apart from the fact of judgment to come, dishonest practices do not pay, because a clear conscience is itself priceless.
Today’s reading: Ecclesiastes 10
